Thank you for the tips! That tutorial is excellent, and, um, it turns out I was doing the slip stitch incorrectly. Rather than inserting the needle at the crease line, I was putting it in just outside of the crease line, which made the stitches more visible. I'm forewarned and forearmed for the next quilt, though. :)
