That is something to think about, yeah. Maybe not this time since it's my first time making a garment since I was in middle school and I know if I complicate the process too much I am unlikely to make progress. But for next time, to get a better fit, tracing versions 1, 2, etc. instead of cutting does sound like a good idea.
